Environment Scanning for HBO’s Emmy-Winning Watchmen
Watchmen is Damon Lindelof’s Emmy-winning sequel to Alan Moore’s graphic novel… an alternate-history 1980s America that’s recognisable enough to feel real and reimagined enough that nothing can be taken for granted. We provided 3D environment scanning and drone filming for the production.
That alternate-history premise is exactly why the scanning brief mattered: a world that’s half familiar and half invented only holds together if the familiar half is built on real geometry. We captured locations with period-accurate precision, combining point cloud processing with high-resolution photogrammetry to deliver fully textured assets, giving the VFX team a genuine spatial foundation to build the series’ reimagined elements on top of.
We worked across multiple production environments, delivering registered point clouds, processed meshes and HDR panoramas to the production’s pipeline spec, coordinated with the VFX supervisor’s requirements and delivered against the schedule.
Watchmen’s whole design philosophy is a meticulous blend of the familiar and the uncanny… one of the hardest visual balances to strike, and one that falls apart if the ’familiar’ side doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. Our scan data gave the production a base solid enough that the uncanny parts could do their work without the ground underneath ever feeling unstable.
