3D Scanning for Migros’ 2018 Christmas Campaign

Migros’ Christmas campaign is Switzerland’s answer to John Lewis… genuinely anticipated, watched closely, and not a brief anyone treats casually. The 2018 instalment continued the story of Finn, introducing his parents into the narrative a year after his first appearance. We provided 3D scanning for the production.

We scanned characters and environments that fed directly into the animation and VFX pipeline, combining point cloud processing with high-resolution photogrammetry to deliver fully textured assets rather than raw geometry. Scanning real performers and physical sets that way gives animated and composited elements a grounded quality that’s hard to fake from reference photography alone… it’s the difference between a CG world that feels like it exists and one that feels like it’s floating slightly above the live-action around it.

Commercial timelines don’t run like feature film timelines. Weeks, not months, between brief and delivery, so everything was captured, processed and delivered to fit that schedule without cutting the quality bar the campaign demanded.

Continuing a character a year on isn’t just a creative decision, it’s a consistency test: does Finn’s world still feel like the same world? Our scanning work was part of the technical foundation that let the answer be yes, which matters more than it sounds for a campaign built on people caring what happens to a cartoon boy.
