When ClockWork Films approached us for their new Channel 4 documentary, Princess Anne: The Plot to Kidnap a Royal, they faced a unique challenge: how to bring their specially crafted model of The Mall to life in a compelling way. Exploring options for the best approach to achieve their vision, they turned to Visualskies. Our expertise in 3D scanning and Unreal Engine offered the perfect solution, enabling them to blend traditional model-making with innovative digital techniques and reimagine historical storytelling.
The documentary reveals the events of 20th March 1974, when Ian Ball attempted to kidnap Princess Anne in the heart of London. This daring shootout unfolded in front of Buckingham Palace, changing the face of royal protection forever. With no existing archive footage to rely on, ClockWork Films embraced innovative technologies to vividly recreate the past.

The Unusual Application of 3D Data for Documentary Filmmaking
At Visualskies, we are no strangers to using 3D data for visual effects in blockbuster films, but Princess Anne: The Plot to Kidnap a Royal marked a departure from our typical projects. Here, the emphasis was on bringing a significant moment in history to lifeโthe attempted kidnapping at The Mall.
The decision to blend traditional model-making with 3D scanning was pivotal to the documentaryโs visual impact. ClockWork Films constructed a bespoke physical model of The Mall, complete with figurines representing the key players in the 1974 drama. While physical models often serve as static representations, our role was to digitally transform this model into a dynamic and interactive reconstruction of the scene, making history accessible to viewers in a captivating way.
3D Dataโs Role in Bringing The Mall to Life
To create a lifelike recreation of the events, we deployed a comprehensive capture strategy using the latest in scanning techniques. We scanned The Mall physical set model in situ within its filming location using both LiDAR and photogrammetry, ensuring that every detail was preserved in its intended context, capturing the shape, texture and lighting set by the DOP, Piers Leigh. To enable us to dynamically tell the story we captured figurines and miniature vehicles with photogrammetry, generating detailed 3D digital twins representing the individuals and elements involved in the kidnapping attempt. This allowed us to precisely place digital actors in their correct positions, reconstructing the events of the day.

Once we completed the scanning process, we meticulously produced 3D Unreal Engine ready assets of all scanned items. This data was then implemented into our proprietary VS Scout App, a virtual scouting tool that allows filmmakers to refine shots on the fly. The app facilitates pre-visualisation of all 3D data and provides rich geomatic information for multiple departments, making it an invaluable resource for collaborative pre-production.
Innovating with Unreal Engine
Once the 3D assets were created, we utilised Unreal Engine to transform the static models into a fully realised digital environment. Known for its ability to produce highly realistic visual effects in real-time, Unreal Engine was key to quickly generating hundreds of shots needed to tell the story using the digital miniature model.
For Princess Anne: The Plot to Kidnap a Royal, the pre-planned shots designed by Laurence Turnbull in the VS Scout App were crucial. He used the app to experiment with camera angles, refine shot composition, and save his plans. These shot plans were then handed over to Visualskies, where we completed the final renders in Unreal Engine, bringing the vision to life in a way that was both visually striking and historically accurate.

Recreating History with 100% Scanned Data
A key component of the project was the use of entirely scanned data for all the on-screen content. By capturing every detail of the physical model, including vehicles, buildings, and figurines, we achieved an unprecedented level of accuracy in recreating the scene and immersing the audience in the drama. Synchronising the onscreen rendered graphics with the actual filmed sequences.
The scanned data was not only used for static visuals but also to design camera movements and create a dynamic narrative that unfolded over just a few minutes. This innovation allowed the team to unpack a series of key moments, creating a visual experience that felt as though the viewer was right there in the action.

Challenges in Merging Traditional and Digital Techniques
The integration of traditional model-making with digital scanning and Unreal Engine wasnโt without its challenges. Filming the physical model in a way that would allow for detailed and fluid camera movements proved difficult. Initially, the team explored using physical cameras and tracks to capture the necessary shots, but this approach would have resulted in a slow and complex shoot and by using a digital set in unreal engine they were able to create shots that wouldโve been physically impossible in the real world
Thatโs when photogrammetry was suggested as a solution, enabling the team to digitally recreate the entire model and design shots in a more flexible and efficient way. Using Visualskies’ VS Scout App on an iPad, the director and editor were able to plan and test camera angles in real time, designing the final shots as the edit evolved.
The Final Product and Industry Recognition
The end result was a ground-breaking blend of physical and digital storytelling, where the charm of traditional model-making met the limitless possibilities of digital visualisation. The film not only brought the past to life in a visually compelling way but also set a new standard for what can be achieved in specialist factual documentaries.
We frequently recognise the powerful synergy between traditional prop-making and 3D scanning, and how integrating these two disciplines can significantly enhance the final visual outcome. This project stands as a clear exemplification to that collaboration.
At Visualskies, we are proud to have been part of this innovative project, which has since been recognised with multiple award nominations, including a Royal Television Society (RTS) Craft & Design Award in the Design – Programme Content Sequences category. In addition, Princess Anne: The Plot To Kidnap A Royal won two awards at the RTS Yorkshire Awards in the Animation, VFX, and CGI category and the Professional Excellence: Post Production category.
