Blending Physical and Virtual Realities: Elevating Training and Innovation Through Cutting-Edge 3D Technology
At Visualskies, we pride ourselves on pushing the boundaries of digital innovation.
Our recent collaboration with Atlantic Airways is a testament to our commitment to excellence and technological prowess. Commissioned to digitise their Leonardo AW139 helicopter, we leveraged an array of 3D scanning techniques to create an immersive and supremely detailed digital twin, delivering a digital experience to help enhance their new training facility, set to open in late 2024.
The Critical Role of the Atlantic Airways Helicopter
Atlantic Airways’ Leonardo AW139 helicopter plays a vital role in search and rescue operations across the Faroe Islands. With a crew on standby 24/7, 365 days a year, this helicopter is uniquely equipped to handle the urgent transportation of patients and respond to emergency situations both on land and at sea in collaboration with the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre.
Crews for this helicopter class must undergo regular training and certification. Atlantic Airways new state-of-the-art facility, located on the Faroe Islands will allow crews to fully immerse themselves in interactive volumetric learning with a focus on Search and Rescuse elements such as HOIST, FLIR, SAR and FMS.

The Challenge: No Downtime, Maximum Precision
One of the primary challenges of this project was to ensure that the helicopter rescue service experienced zero downtime during the digitisation process. Recognising the critical nature of their operations, our solution guaranteed seamless integration with their maintenance schedule. By creating a digital twin of the helicopter using a meticulous fusion of photogrammetry, LiDAR, and structured light scanning techniques, we captured detailed spatial data that serves multiple purposes, from training simulations to future applications in virtual production and spatial media. Each of these technologies contributed unique strengths to achieve millimetre-accurate scan data, providing a comprehensive and versatile dataset.
– VS Operatives worked collaboratively with Atlantic Airways to ensure 3D data was captured efficiently
The Solution: Scanning components with a range of techniques
Working around the yearly maintenance schedule (where one of the helicopters as broken down and rebuilt). We scanned both the entire helicopter and fourteen component parts.
– We digitised both the helicopter in its entirety and 14 separate component parts.
It was imperative that our approach was such that even the smallest details (such as cables, labels and switches) were clear in the final result. Without these key details the models would be insufficient for training purposes. To achieve this we combined a number of production and post production techniques:
Integrated Approach: By combining photogrammetry, LiDAR, and structured light scanning data, we created a single cohesive and comprehensive dataset.
Enhanced Detail: Each technology brought its strengths to the table, resulting in a detailed and highly accurate 3D model.
Seamless Workflow: Our team efficiently merged data from multiple sources, ensuring a smooth and precise final output.
Millimetre Precision: We achieved exceptional accuracy in the final scan data, essential for high-fidelity simulation and training.
Validation Techniques: Rigorous validation processes were implemented to ensure the integrity and reliability of the data.
Consistent Quality: The highest standards of accuracy were maintained throughout all stages of data capture and processing.
Advanced Processing: Utilising cutting-edge software tools, we processed and refined the captured data to perfection.
Visualisation and Analysis: The data is hosted on our secure online viewer platform, providing an interactive and user-friendly interface for immersive exploration.
Automation and Efficiency: Automated processes streamlined data integration, enhancing efficiency and accuracy.

The Solution: Interactive and Immersive Training Tools
To enhance the usability of the data, we designed and installed a 43” touchscreen stand at Atlantic Airways’ headquarters. This installation allows trainees to review the helicopter and its components dynamically, without needing to take it out of service. Our secure online viewer platform also hosts the data, allowing for continuous updates and maintenance as required.
– With a user-friendly interface, the data is easily accessible, allowing users to explore the entire dataset effortlessly
Future Applications: Beyond Simulation
The capture of highly detailed 3D data opens up a world of possibilities across various industries, far beyond the initial scope of any single project. The benefits of precise digital data extend into numerous advanced applications, enabling innovation and efficiency in ways previously unimaginable:
- Enhanced Maintenance Planning and Engineering Analysis: Accurate 3D data serves as a foundational tool for maintenance and engineering. By creating detailed digital twins of assets, organisations can conduct virtual inspections, perform simulations, and develop maintenance strategies without requiring physical access. This capability not only reduces downtime but also enables proactive maintenance, minimising the risk of unexpected failures.
- VR/Spatial Media and Training: The integration of precise 3D models into immersive environments revolutionises training programmes across industries. Whether for aviation, manufacturing, or healthcare, spatial media training allows personnel to interact with complex systems and equipment in a risk-free virtual space. This approach enhances learning outcomes, increases safety, and reduces training costs by eliminating the need for physical equipment.
- Innovation in Design and Engineering: High-fidelity 3D data is a game-changer for design and engineering. It enables detailed analysis and simulation of new designs before they are physically constructed, allowing engineers to test structural integrity, optimise designs, and explore innovative solutions with greater confidence. This virtual prototyping accelerates the development process, reduces costs, and fosters creativity by providing a clear understanding of how a design will perform in the real world.
- Virtual Production and VFX: In the media and entertainment industry, accurate 3D data is invaluable for virtual production and VFX. Digital assets created from real-world objects or environments can be seamlessly integrated into virtual sets, allowing filmmakers to craft realistic scenes without the need for on-location shoots. This not only enhances visual storytelling but also provides greater flexibility in the production process, reducing time and costs.
- Augmented Reality (AR) and Customer Engagement: Companies are increasingly using 3D data in AR applications to enhance customer engagement. For example, detailed digital models can be projected into a customer’s environment, allowing them to visualise products or solutions in real-time. This interactive experience can significantly boost customer satisfaction, aid in decision-making, and drive sales by providing a more tangible connection to the product or service.
- Digital Asset Management and Preservation: Accurate 3D data allows for the creation of digital archives of physical assets. These digital records can be used for historical preservation, ensuring that important cultural or industrial artefacts are maintained for future generations. Additionally, secure digital asset management systems such as Visualskies VoluStor can leverage this data to track and manage assets more efficiently, providing a digital reference that can be accessed and updated as needed.
