Visualskies Director and Co-founder Joseph Steel recently talked to Andrew Marr on the New Statesman Podcast about our use of drones and how thev’ve help to shape our business, by digitising large areas quickly and efficiently.
Operating for nearly a decade, VISUALSKIES LTD were one of the first commercial operators to attain CAA Operational Authorisation (back then, known as a Permission for Aerial Work).
Over that time we’ve witnessed and embraced the rapid change in aerial based technologies. The recent report by PWC “Skies Without Limits 2.0” found that drone technology could add £45bn to the UK economy. In this podcast Joe discusses how we’ve played a small part in contributing to that figure.
One of the highlights for the Visualskies teams has been utilising DJI drones to operate in some of the furthest regions of the globe, helping to make archaeological discoveries utilising a range of scanning technologies including aerial LiDAR, photogrammetry, Ground Penetrating Radar and Thermography.
We’re continuing to work with companies like DJI to push the boundaries of what capable with aerial technologies as well as with regulators to enable us to complete the most complicated aerial projects.

Collaboration with Sony and DJI
Large companies like DJI continue to trust Visualskies to champion their products. Visualskies recently exhibited at Drone-X at London’s Excel Centre in collaboration with Sony. Together we showcased the Sony ILX-LR1 on our DJI M300 drone, utilising the Gremsey Pixy-LR gimbal. This combination give us high resolution 61mp photos with a camera that weighs just 243g meaning that we can fly for longer and cover a larger areas when digitising large environments.
