3D Scanning for a Period Supernatural Thriller

Sinners is a critically acclaimed supernatural thriller from director Ryan Coogler, set in 1930s Mississippi. The production demanded meticulous period-accurate environments and required VFX support that could match the film’s high-contrast, atmospheric visual style.

Visualskies provided 3D scanning across key locations and sets, capturing precise geometric data that underpinned the film’s visual effects work. Terrestrial LiDAR scans of period buildings and rural landscapes gave the VFX team accurate spatial reference, enabling digital extensions and set augmentations that sit convincingly within the photographed frame.

The scan data was delivered as registered point clouds alongside processed meshes, formatted for direct import into the production’s VFX pipeline. Alongside the geometric data, HDR panoramas from each scan position provided the lighting reference needed for consistent illumination matching between physical and digital elements.

For a film where atmosphere and period authenticity are central to the storytelling, the accuracy of scan-based assets is critical.
