3D Scanning Netflix’s Puzzle-Box Period Thriller
1899 is the German-language Netflix puzzle-box thriller from the creators of Dark, set aboard an ocean liner where the production design does as much storytelling as the script. We provided 3D scanning for the production, capturing the geometry of the ship’s constructed sets and period interiors.
The ship’s interiors are a scanning brief in themselves… long corridors, engine rooms, cabins and mechanical spaces, all dense with metal and wooden geometry that has to hold up as the series gets stranger and the environments start bending in ways a real ship never would. We scanned it all with terrestrial LiDAR for the geometry, then combined that with high-resolution photogrammetry to deliver the fully textured assets the VFX team could build those digital extensions from.
Deliverables were registered point clouds across each environment, processed meshes ready for the production’s VFX pipeline, and HDR panoramas for lighting reference… delivered in the vendor’s required formats and coordinated against the VFX supervisor’s coverage list.
When the set itself is a character in the story, digital extensions have to feel continuous with what was actually built… the moment they don’t, the whole puzzle-box conceit starts to wobble. Our scan data was the geometric anchor that kept 1899’s increasingly surreal spaces tied to something real underneath.
