3D Scanning and Drone Services for House of the Dragon

House of the Dragon is HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel, set 200 years before the original series around the Targaryen civil war… a production with a VFX scope large enough to need dragons, large-scale battles and Westeros itself rebuilt in detail across multiple castles. We provided 3D scanning and drone services across two episodes, including the Dragonstone Bridge environment.

We combined terrestrial scanning for detailed interior environments with drone scanning for exteriors and castle settings, then layered high-resolution photogrammetry over the point cloud data to deliver fully textured assets… giving the VFX team comprehensive spatial coverage rather than patchy reference for some locations and none for others. Dragonstone Bridge in particular needed to hold up at the scale the show operates at.

A production this size runs on multiple VFX vendors working simultaneously on different sequences, which means the scan data has to be consistent across all of them. Get that wrong and you end up with continuity errors… the same castle built slightly differently by two different facilities because they were working from different reference.

We coordinated with the VFX supervisor to make sure the scanning brief covered everything in scope and that data reached the relevant vendors inside the production timeline. On a show operating at this scale, that coordination is as much the job as the scanning itself.
