Aerial Photogrammetry and 3D Scanning for Disney

Artemis Fowl brings Eoin Colfer’s underground fairy world to the screen, which means the fantasy has to grow out of somewhere real… in this case, Ireland. We provided aerial photogrammetry and additional scanning services, along with 3D environment scanning and drone filming for the location work.

Location scanning is what lets a fantasy production build outward rather than from scratch: it gives the VFX team measurable spatial reality to anchor the Haven City sequences to, so the transition from real Irish landscape to underground fairy civilisation is a continuation rather than a jump cut in believability. Drone photogrammetry covered the aerial reference the ground-based scans couldn’t reach.

Deliverables followed Disney’s pipeline requirements: registered and processed point cloud data, clean meshes and HDR panoramic references for each environment, all handed over in formats compatible with the production’s VFX vendor.

A fantasy film lives or dies on whether audiences believe the impossible parts, and that belief is built on the credibility of everything ordinary around it. Our scanning work gave the production’s artists a survey-accurate Irish landscape to build from… the real ground underneath a world that was never meant to look real.
