Full LiDAR Survey of Smithfield Market
Smithfield Market is a Grade II listed Victorian building that’s been London’s central meat market since 1868. As part of its transformation into a cultural and commercial space, we were commissioned to deliver a full 3D LiDAR survey ahead of the restoration programme.
We scanned the full extent of the central avenue, the eastern market and the ancillary spaces, registering multiple scan positions into a single coordinated point cloud. Ornate Victorian ironwork, arched roof structures, original brickwork and floor levels all came through at millimetre accuracy… the level of detail a heritage building like this deserves and a restoration team actually needs.
What you end up with is a permanent digital record of the building exactly as it stood before anyone touched it. Architects, structural engineers and heritage consultants can pull dimensions and condition data straight from the point cloud rather than sending someone back to site every time a question comes up.
Restoration work on a building this old only gets one shot at the ’before’ record… miss it and it’s gone. We take that seriously, and Smithfield’s is the kind of survey we’re proud to have on file: a piece of London’s Victorian fabric, preserved digitally down to the ironwork, before the work began.
